The Facts About Bad Breath

The Facts About Bad Breath

We have all had an experience where you have been required to speak to someone and you have been unable to concentrate on their response because of their bad breath. The medical term for this condition is known as halitosis and there can be a number of causes for it. However, the end result is always the same and it can be described as the presence of foul smelling gases in exhaled air.

So, what causes this to happen? Well, there are two main types of halitosis and one is easier to explain than the other. The first type is called transient bad breath and this can be caused as a result of a number of seemingly innocuous factors. Having a dry mouth, which can be due to thirst, stress or nerves, can cause bad breath as can certain food stuffs. Strong smelling food such as garlic, onion or other heavily spiced dishes can linger on the breath of the person who consumed it. Smoking is another factor which can cause bad breath and poor oral hygiene is a sure way to halitosis. Saliva is able to kill a certain degree of bacteria in the mouth but it does need to be helped by the use of toothbrushes, toothpaste and mouthwash. The most common form of transient bad breath is commonly known as morning breath. This occurs as a result of your mouth remaining relatively still for a long period of time and so your saliva production is slowed drastically and the bacteria build up overnight. Brushing your teeth in the morning removes the bacteria and so removes the odour.

Chronic bad breath is a more serious condition and it is persistent and difficult to treat. It can affect up to 25% of the population and is caused as a result of certain types of bacteria being produced in excessive amounts. Treatment is not readily available and the clinics which are starting to appear tend to just be outlets for a bad breath product which claims to remedy the problem but which does not treat the cause. As such, these products are only temporary relievers of the problem and not a cure.

A third type of halitosis is recognised but it is a side effect of the more serious condition of chronic liver failure. This type of bad breath is known as fetor hepaticus and is described as smelling as foul as a freshly opened corpse.

For many, bad breath is seen as something comical and people who suffer from it are ridiculed and avoided. However, for the sufferers themselves it can cause real psychological difficulties. Many find it difficult to form relationships and even to speak to people as they are conscious of the odour. They can become very depressed and withdrawn.

For those whose bad breath is of the transient type, many things can be done to rid yourself of it. It is known that the majority of smells come from bacteria produced by food debris which is trapped in the mouth. Following a good oral hygiene routine, including brushing and flossing, will remove these pieces of food and so prevent the bacteria from building up. Using mint flavoured mouth washes, chewing gums and lozenges can mask the problem briefly but do not rid the cause permanently. However, if you are on the go they can be beneficial until you are able to clean your teeth thoroughly

Teething Without Biting Your Nails

Teething Without Biting Your Nails

For some babies, teething is a simple affair, with few noticeable side effects. For others, it takes months of pain and anguish to get those first teeth to pop in. Here is some information to help you get through the teething stage, without spending too much time biting your nails.

When will it happen?
Well, that largely depends on when it happened for you and your husband. The timing of the appearance of that first tooth is largely hereditary. The average age is about seven months, though the first tooth can appear as early as three months, or as late as after the first birthday. However, teething symptoms can begin two or three months before the appearance of the tooth, so your child can seem to be teething for months on end. For many children, the painful symptoms are much more pronounced in the first two or three teeth, but then subside somewhat on subsequent teeth.

How do I alleviate the pain?
There are many remedies to help with teething, without resulting to over the counter pain medicines. Homeopathic teething tablets, which dissolve on the child’s tongue, were a godsend when my children were teething. I also took those little baby washcloths, wet them down, twisted them into a sort of stick shape and froze them. They are easy to chew on this way, and are colder than a traditional teething ring put in the refrigerator, though these work great for some babies. When things get extreme, a little acetaminophen or ibuprofen before bedtime can help your child sleep better.

Are there other symptoms?
In some babies, there can be other symptoms that accompany the pain of teething. The most common is a stomach ache and diarrhea. This is thought to be caused by the extra saliva that a baby produces during teething. Many babies also run a low grade fever. Another, less common symptom is what we referred to as “teething poop”. Whenever my daughter was going through a bout of teething, her bowel movements would burn the skin on her bottom, as though it was very acidic. So, in addition to being in pain from the teething, she had a sore bottom, too. We alleviated this pain with oatmeal baths, and with being more diligent about changing her diaper immediately after a bowel movement.

Teething is a normal part of babyhood, and, even if it is painful, it is temporary. Keep on top of the symptoms, and soon you’ll be seeing a big toothy grin on your baby!

Lack of saliva is a common problem that may seem little more bothering, but a dry mouth can affect both your enjoyment of food and the health of your teeth. That's why it's important not to ignore a dry mouth.

The average healthy adult produces about 3 pints of saliva a day. This secretion serves many purposes. It helps prevent tooth decay and washes away food and plaque from your teeth. Saliva also limits bacterial growth that can dissolve tooth enamel or lead to mouth infections. It also neutralizes damaging acids in your mouth. Saliva enhances your ability to taste your food and makes it easier to swallow. In addition, enzymes in saliva aid in digestion.

As you get older, your salivary glands may secrete less saliva. Thirst and your perception of thirst also may change. Thirst receptors in your brain become less responsive to your body's need for fluids. But xerostomia is more often related to the medications taken by older adults rather than to the effects of aging.

A dry mouth is not a diagnosis in itself. It is a symptom of various causes which include medication, radiotherapy to the head or neck, mouth breathing, dehydration or certain diseases. There are more than four hundred of medications, including some over-the-counter drugs, that produce dry mouth as a side effect. Among the more likely types to cause problems are some of the drugs used to treat depression and anxiety, antihistamines, high blood pressure medications, anti-diarrhea, muscle relaxants, drugs for incontinence, and Parkinson's disease medications. Some diseases affect the salivary glands that can also cause dry mouth such as Sjögren's Syndrome, HIV/AIDS, diabetes, and Parkinson's disease.

The salivary glands can be damaged if they are exposed to radiation during cancer treatment. Drugs used to treat cancer can make saliva thicker, causing the mouth to feel dry. Moreover, injury to the head or neck can damage the nerves that tell salivary glands to make saliva. However, there are still other effective treatments for dry mouth. Here are some practical recommendations:

· sip water or other sugar-free juices frequently
· keep fluids at bedside at night
· chew sugarless gum or candy
· avoid tobacco, alcohol and foods high in sugar
· adjust the air humidity in your home
· breathe through your nose, not through your mouth

To determine if you have dry mouth, visit your doctor or dentist. They will likely examine your mouth and review your medical history. Sometimes, you will need blood tests and imaging scans of your salivary glands to identify the cause. Dry mouth can result in oral discomfort and can have serious consequences. If you feel you have this symptom, please see your oral health professional. If your doctor believes medication to be the cause, your physician may adjust your dosage or switch you to another medication that doesn't cause a dry mouth and prescribe you other medications to stimulate saliva production. Dry mouth can happen to everyone, and as it is like any disease or disorder, it is always advisable to visit your physician if you are experiencing some of its symptoms. Again, early detection and prevention is always the best and effective treatment.

Brush Up On Your Dog’s Dental Health

Brush Up On Your Dog's Dental Health

Many pet owners may be surprised to learn a dog's dental health is as important to overall well-being as a daily game of fetch.

Dental problems in pets go way beyond bad breath. Periodontal disease is the most common health problem in dogs today. At least 80 percent of dogs suffer from it by age 2. Left untreated, dental problems can be very painful and affect the quality of a pet's life.

Small-breed dogs under 20 pounds are at an even greater risk than larger breeds. First, small dogs have small mouths that crowd the teeth, and second, those teeth are excessively large for those small jaws.

Fortunately, small breeds don't need to suffer, says Dr. Daniel Carmichael, veterinary dental specialist with the Veterinary Medical Center in West Islip, N.Y. He recommends:

1. See your veterinarian for regular dental checkups. Work with your vet to schedule regular professional dental checkups and ask how you can maintain your pet's dental health. Monitor for bad breath, which can be a sign of a more serious dental problem.

2. Brush those canines. Daily tooth brushing is the best way to remove and prevent plaque build- up. You can try the new state-of-the-art Hartz® Dental™ Electric Tooth-brush to make brushing your dog's teeth easier. It features a vibrating brush head and, when used as directed, is clinically proven to reduce tartar by 85 percent and plaque by 28 percent after three weeks. Use toothpaste made for dogs (beef-flavored paste is appealing to pets) as it's designed to be swallowed and does not foam up in the mouth.

3. Choose smart snacks for your dog. Chewing rawhide has been proven in clinical studies to help reduce plaque and tartar. Tasty beef and chicken flavors encourage your pooch to chew longer, increasing the dental benefits. Another option is Hartz® Dental™ Nutri-Fresh Chew™ with OdorZap™ crystals to freshen breath, in addition to reducing tartar up to 61 percent.

4. Provide toys with dental benefits. Some newer chew toys have raised tips that help remove plaque and tartar. The Hartz® Dental™ Chew™ ‘n Clean® Deli Cuts are one example and come in three yummy flavors. These toys provide chewing exercise to strengthen gums and help relieve anxiety and boredom.

Managing To Live Comfortably With Your Diabetes (2)

Managing To Live Comfortably With Your Diabetes

A diagnosis of diabetes is probably amongst one of the hardest ones to swallow. With no cure, and a plethora of treatments that must be done on a daily basis it can be overwhelming. Don't be overwhelmed though. With the right knowledge it is a very manageable disease, and one can live quite a normal life.

To be sensitive to those with diabetes, use diabetic friendly recipes anytime you have guests over and you are cooking. Instead of asking if anyone has diabetes, just assume everyone at the table does. Even non-diabetics are sure to enjoy tasty yet healthy cooking that leaves them feeling great but not bloated.

Do not eat meats that are high in fat if you have diabetes. These meats can raise your glucose levels which can cause many serious health problems. Most supermarkets sell lean meats that have the same taste but are healthier for your diabetes. Also, try to stick with low-fat dairy products.

If you suffer from diabetes, take excellent care of your teeth and dental hygiene. Visit your dentist and hygienist regularly for cleanings and examinations to make sure any early stages of gum disease are diagnosed and treated quickly. Also, be sure to brush and floss carefully and monitor your gums and mouth for any sores or abrasions.

A good tip for the diabetic sufferer is to have a consistent eating schedule. Have breakfast, lunch, dinner, and snacks at as close to the same time every day as possible. This will help you more accurately monitor changes in blood sugar levels throughout the day, allowing you to dose your insulin more accordingly.

Properly care for any scrapes or injuries you incur. Diabetes makes it difficult for your body to heal, and it also increases the likelihood that you will get an infection, so it is important to take care of even minor injuries right away. Always clean them and apply an antibiotic cream. Go to the doctor if your wound does not improve.

Diabetes affects your risk of heart disease, so to lower this risk, consider taking an aspirin every day. Diabetics are at higher risk of heart disease because the platelets in their blood may tend to form clumps more easily, which can lead to heart attacks. Aspirin can counter this risk. Ask your doctor if you should add aspirin to your daily treatment routine, since you should avoid aspirin if you have conditions like bleeding ulcers.

If you have diabetes, it is important to get the right amount of sleep. Sleeping too much and not sleeping long enough can both affect how much you crave food. If you give in to those cravings, you will gain weight, and you will be at risk for other complications. Try to get around eight hours of sleep each night.

In conclusion, while diabetes is indeed one of the hardest diseases to manage, it isn't necessarily a death sentence. Sure it does require a lot of lifestyle changes, but nothing so out of the ordinary that it will utterly ruin your life. Accept your diagnosis, and the advice from this article, and live more relaxed.
